Winston Churchill’s Renegade Spy by Steve Haberman (Author) is a spy thriller that I choose to read believing it would bring my husband I closer together and give my husband a book to share with my son. We can add Winston Churchill to our homeschool studies. The story is about World War II and through the story my hsuabdn was able to engage in my son’s studies.
The protagonist, is an American who previously served as a bodyguard to Churchill and then discharged, is given an unexpected mission on the Continent to detect a traitor close to the Prime Minister. As you can guess this is never an easy task, but it keeps our hero on the run, always in danger.
The story begins in early summer in 1940. Ex-New York City detective Jonas Shaw is in Zurich, Switzerland to pick up a small inheritance. He had just been fired as a bodyguard to British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Shaw had saved Churchill’s life in New York City a couple of years earlier and had been offered the job of bodyguard. Shaw has a fiancé, Edith, still living in the Big Apple. France had just been beaten by Germany and Britain was now alone facing the Nazi juggernaut. There are chases galore and hand to hand combat scenes. A little history is present also.
Action, Suspense thrills and chases everyone a man would like not only in a book but a TV Show and I could see this becoming a movie of the month of even a movie on the History Channel. It was a tad slow at first and I had trouble pushing through but this didn’t bother my husband and even my son read the book and enjoyed the storyline.
About the book:
Mid-1940, the darkest of the nights for Britain during WWII. Adolf Hitler’s unstoppable military has conquered most of Europe, including France, only twenty miles from the English coast. It is now set to conquer the island-nation itself. Plotting to aid this onslaught, a German spy lurks somewhere within Winston Churchill’s government.
Such is the dire news an emissary of the prime minister secretly brings to disgraced Churchill bodyguard, Jonas Shaw, an ex-New York City detective, along with a plea: help discover the agent before the Nazis invade. Shaw has faced many challenges in his eventful life, but none as dangerous and fateful as this one, helping save Western civilization. First in a series.
