The Littlest Yak And The New Arrival (Review)

Children's Book Reviews The Mommies Reviews

I would like to share a new children’s book The Littlest Yak And The New Arrival by Lu Fraser (Author), Kate Hindley (Illustrator) I received a copy of in exchange for this review. Inside this post are my affiliate links if you click on the links and make a purchase I will make small percentage from the items you purchase.

Charlie and I will be reading k The Littlest Yak And The New Arrival in our Homeschool Reading Class this week and then we will be studying the Yak which can be placed in our studies on animals. Once we finish our studies I’m going to have Charlie research Yak’s and see if he can find one for us to go see in person. If we find one would you like to go on a Field Trip with us?

In the meantime I wish you could see the cover of the book with the Yaks on the cover with there colorful hats on which are so pretty. There were a couple of the hats Charlie and I would have liked to have borrowed this Winter. Look at the bottom of the picture at the baby Yaks. They are so cute. I wish I could touch them and hold them to help keep them warm because they look like there cold.

In the book we meet Gertie the littlest Yak of all. Gerti’s mom tells her she is having a baby soon. She begins to know a bi for the baby because they can be sticky but knitting isn’t easy for Gerti. In our homeschool art class Charlie and I can try knotting a bib as well. Would you like to join us in knotting and we can take a Field Trip to a store to pick out yarn.

Granny Hilda comes to stay with Gerti while mom is away having the baby. Granny Hilda tells Gerti what the baby needs most is sharing so Gerti grabs all of her belongings to share with the baby. Gertie realizes he is going to have to share his mom. He wonders if she will have enough love for him and the baby.

They go to bed and Gerti slips out of bed and draw’s mum’s heart to be sure there is enough room for him and the baby. She stacks up all of her stuff and see there might only be room for one of them. To calm her nerves Gerti sets off to find her mum. Then Gerti hears something and its a 100 Yaks with her mum looking for her.

Mom assured Gerti there would be room for her and the baby as well. They start home and they stop at the heart Gertie drew. Mom showed Gerti how hearts grow and they stepped into the heart together. Then mum shows Gerti the baby Yak and Gerti says even her heart has grown to include the baby.

To see what else happens in the book you will need to pick up your own copy which is perfect for small children to adults who love animals just as Charlie and I do. I love that the Author teaches us about love in a positive way. The Littlest Yak And The New Arrival should be in every school and every library.

About the book:

A little yak yearns for BIG things in this rollicking, rhyming picture book that celebrates individuality, unique talents, and the importance of not growing up too fast.

Gertie is the littlest yak in her pack, feeling stuck in her smallness. She wants to grow up and have BIGNESS and TALLNESS, with the hugest of hooves and humongous horns too! Because there isn’t anything a BIG yak can’t do.

So Gertie devises a growing-up plan. She eats her veggies, exercises every day, and reads lots of books. Still, she isn’t any bigger. But when the other yaks come calling for Gertie to help them with a daring and dangerous task, could it be because it’s something only a small yak can do?

Lu Fraser’s debut picture book is a heartwarming and relatable story of individuality, self-esteem, and the joys of being young and small. best-selling illustrator Kate Hindley has created a delightful wintry landscape, packed with adorable yaks in woolly hats and coats. Readers won’t be able to resist snuggling down with this charming read aloud.

About the author: Lu Fraser

Lu Fraser loves books; she loves the shape of them, the feel of them & even the smell of them (she’s been caught giving them a good sniff when she thinks no one is looking!).

Her debut picture book, ‘The Littlest Yak’ (illustrated by Kate Hindley) won the Oscars Book Prize, The Sainsbury’s Best Picture Book Award & The Sainsbury’s Children’s Book of the Year Award, whilst her second book, ‘The Viking Who Liked Icing’ (illustrated by Mark McKinley) was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Award.

Over the years Lu has lived in lots of places (& travelled to lots more) but the one thing she always packs is a good book. Now she gets to write her own books in a shed in her garden. Lu is pretty sure life doesn’t get any better than that.

After books, Lu is also very fond of Yaks, Vikings, Witchlings & Camels. Luckily for her family she hasn’t put any of these in her shed (yet…).

Lu lives in the south of England, in the middle of nowhere, with her husband & daughter & their much-hugged Beagle & Great Dane.
