Halloween Gift Guide 23: The Spirit Glass

I would like to share a Middle Grade Fantasy Novel The Spirit Glass I received for a review that would be perfect for a Reading Class. As well as a great addition to our Halloween Gift Guide 23. I hope you take the time to check out the novel and to add it to this years Shopping List for all the middle schoolers you know.

For me personally The Spirit Glass is a book you wouldn’t usually see me reading but I needed to find a book that would capture Charlie’s attention for his home school reading class and The Spirit Galss is standalone novel perfect for middle schoolers and above to read featuring fantasy with Filipino mythology.

The Spirit Galss is about Corazon who lives with her aunt Tina because her parents died several years ago. Even though her parents are deceased they visit her every Saturday for dinner because her mother fashioned a soul key years ago. Tina is a powerful babaylan, and tells Corazon she will train her when her magic awakes. Corazon plans on bringing her parents back as soon as she is as powerful as Tina.

One night, at the Midnight Bridge market, a vengeful spirit tricks Corazon, and she loses her spirit key. Corazon must go on a quest to form a new key, with one of the ghost’s possessions. Corazon only has three days to do fashion the key before she loses the key forever. Corazon doesn’t go alone her pet Gecko/Alligator Saso is with her. They meet a ghost along the way who wants to be a reporter in the afterlife and wants to come along to see the action. No, I am not going to tell you what happens because you need to pick up your own copy of The Spirit Glass.

I love learning about other people’s cultural heritage, and The Spirit Glass does this and so much more. Saso steals the show time causing Charlie and I laugh a lot at his dialogue. Chokshi shares the story of the vengeful ghost as Corazon visits different gods to receive their blessings, creating some sympathy for her plight making this a fun read for boys and girls alike.

I wish that The Spirit Glass had been written when my nephew David was little because he would have enjoyed the story which he will be able to share with my niece lily and nephew Jason when they get older. The Spirit Glass is inspiring and beautiful in its descriptions. The lessons are important for many children patience, courage, and resolution.

About the Book:

Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents a standalone quest adventure based on Filipino mythology by Roshani Chokshi, author of the best-selling Aru Shah series.

Corazon yearns to finally start training as a babaylan (a mystical healer and spirit guide) under her powerful guardian, Aunt Tina. As soon as her magic awakens, Corazon plans to bring her parents back from the dead and no longer have to rely on a soul key to allow visits with their ghosts for a few hours every Saturday night.

But when a vengeful ghost steals Corazon’s precious key, the fragile balance between the human world and the spirit world is thrown out of whack. Aunt Tina reveals that if Corazon wants her magic to awaken, then she must lay the ghost to rest by fashioning a new soul key.

With her rather bloodthirsty gecko companion, Saso, Corazon embarks on a quest through the spirit realms. But they must move quickly, for  if the ghost gets  through the spirit glass, all hope will be lost.

Roshani Chokshi pays tribute to her Filipino heritage in this book that has all the magic, sparkle, and heart that made her Aru Shah series a fantasy classic.
