Good morning , I would like to share a Middle School book with you this morning. Ginny Off The Map written by Caroline Hickey and the book is Illustrated by Kelly Murphy
I don’t know about your children but getting Charlie to read a book is harder than pulling a tooth. While I am like my dad and would read anything you hand to me. Which is how Charlie’s sisters and brothers from David are. While Suzzane was like me and once she finished attending Sylvan Learning Center would read anything she could get her hands on.
The one thing I can say my niece David and his wife Alyssa are doing is having their children read for at least 30 minutes a day. But as they get older, I believe they should increase that time. This Summer I signed up my sister, Lily, Jason, Charlie, David and myself for our libraires summer Reading program to get Charlie to read more.
This week I plan on getting Charlie on a Zoom call each evening and reading Ginny Off the Map to them and then the next week letting my sister take it to her house and Lily and Jason can call Charlie and I and read the book to us. Which allows Charlie and I to share with reading with them and I can be sure each of the kids including Charlie is reading.
In the meantime, I sat down and read the book on my own so I could see if I thought Lily who is 7 would be able to read it and I am sure she can and will like the story a lot. I love how the Author shows a child can set up a camp and I wish I had thought of this when Charlie was smaller and we lived in our old neighborhood as it would have kept the kids busy and learning all Summer long.
Charlie and I haven’t studied much Geography in our homeschool and I hope the information the Author shares with us gets Charlie intrigued and will lead to new lessons and classes this year. There is illustrations in the book to keep the children interested in the story at all times. This book is for Middle Age Students, but children and adults of all ages will enjoy the storyline.
Did you know as your reading this book there are approximately 20 volcanoes erupting somewhere in the world? I didn’t but this is a learning fact the kids will be able to share with their parents that the Author shared with us. Knowing Charlie, they way I do I can see him researching the fact to see if it’s true or not which will lead to more learning. Which is a Godsend for parents like me who homeschool their children.
Children will learn about moving, STEM schools and having a parent deployed as well as being different from their siblings and friends leading you to create things you like just like Ginny did with the camp. Although Charlie will be more fascinated about the sister who plays Basketball which he eats drinks and sleeps.
When we discuss the Author with Lily and Jason we will get to discuss “Where In The World Is Carmen San-diago which I’m not even sure Charlie knows who is because this was a game from the 80’s and we all know Charlie wasn’t born till 2007. Way before C’s time back in the Dinosaur age as Charlie would say. LOL

She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from The New School in New York City and has worked as an adjunct professor at McDaniel College, a writing mentor for at-risk girls, and a workshop instructor at Writopia Lab. She is a member of the Children’s Book Guild of Washington, DC, where she lives with her husband, two young daughters, and one very busy puppy.
