As any busy parent will tell you, there is always a lot to do and nowhere near as much time to do it! When we have numerous things to balance in life, not just our parental duties, but our job and, of course, those other aspects that creep up on us as we age, like looking after older parents, we can find so many things pulling at us that we stop being good at living. What does it take to become better at life when there is just too much to do?

Get the Help You Need

We can feel too proud to even think about asking for help, but if you have a lot to do and not enough time to do it in, especially if you’ve got an older parent that needs looking after, you’ve got to consider if helping them into a care home is one approach that helps everyone. It could be easy for us to think that putting a parent into a care home helps us, but we have to look at the issue in the round. 

In more domestic circumstances, you could benefit from getting a cleaner. For some reason, we always feel too proud to ask for help, and think that pushing through is the best approach. The reality is that, these days there’s plenty of evidence to show that the old adage “what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger” is not actually true!

Be More Aware of How You Feel

We spend a lot of time pushing through to the detriment of how we’re actually feeling within ourselves. If you are constantly on the go and don’t sit down until the evening time, it is a good idea to turn the mirror onto yourself and look at becoming more aware of how you feel. 

So many of us get sick around Christmas because this is the one time that we stop or it becomes a culmination of so much pressure and stress that built up throughout the year. Getting certain practices into your life, for example, journaling or talking things out with a close friend or counselor can help you work towards a better emotional shift.

Allowing Yourself the Luxury of Enjoyment

We can have too much to do, and when there isn’t enough time to do it, this means we end up piling duties on our plate and feel that we can’t relax until everything is done. It’s far better to look at everything you need to do with a different prism. For example, are you actually getting 80% of the results with 20% of the efforts, commonly known as the Pareto principle? 

When you have too much to do, it’s far better to look at the things that give you the biggest return, so when you start to look at the little jobs around the house that is wasted effort or you find that you are working hard instead of working smart, you can start to take things out of your life that isn’t serving a good purpose.

We all have too much to do but that’s not to say we can’t get better at life itself!
