Charlie and I would like to ask you to check out the Holidays being celebrated today and let us know which holiday you most want to celebrate and why. Charlie said even though he doesn’t go to school if I had my Bike here instead of storage, we could have ridden our bikes around the neighborhood. Would you like to join us?
Bike to School Day – First Wednesday in May
National Bike Month is in May making the first Wednesday in May, the perfect time to ride your bike to school. The Spring weather is perfect for a ride. Biking is relaxing. Biking is fun and bike riding is a healthy exercise. The League of American Bicyclists and schools around the Country work together encouraging students to skip the bus ride, and bike to school for both exercise and for fun. In today’s digital electronic world, kids in America can use the exercise and time away from Cell Phones. Encouraging today’s youth to ride a bike, can lead to a lifelong addiction to cycling. That’s a good addiction which leads to healthier adults.
The first Bike to School Day was held in 2012 with approximately 1,000 schools participating. This event has quickly grown, and now thousands of schools take part in this Holiday. In addition to promoting health and exercise through biking, the promoters are also seeking to assure safe baking routes to and from schools.
Participate in this Holiday, by riding your bike to school. Did you know the holiday is recognized that not all schools are located where the route to school has sidewalks, and roads that are safe to ride on? If you can’t ride your bike to school, perhaps you can walk. For those who are no longer in school, ride your bike to work or in other words, get your bike out of the garage and get some healthy exercise.
History and Origin of Bike to School Day:
The League of American Bicyclists joined forces with schools to organize and coordinate Bike to School Day each year. While their website does not come right out and claim to be the creators, we believe that they are. This holiday event was created in 2012.
There is some reference to this day as a “National” day. However, the sponsor’s website refers to it as “Bike to School Day”. We did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day.

International Migratory Bird Day observed on the second Saturday in May
People love Birds and Bird watching is a favorite pastime of millions of people. This is the most popular of hobbies and can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of age. With this popularity, it comes as no surprise that there is more than one day established to recognize, appreciate, and enjoy Birds. We suggest you celebrate all of these Holidays.
Now, let’s help to take some of the confusion around a number of distinctly different “bird” days:
Bird Day is the oldest of the Holidays set aside to recognize Birds. According to the U.S. Library of Congress, Bird Day was first observed on May 4th, 1894. The holiday was started by Charles Almanzo Babcock, superintendent of schools in Oil City, Pennsylvania. By 1910, Bird Day was widely celebrated, often in conjunction with Arbor Day. Bird Day and Arbor Day events are focused upon conservation training and awareness.
National Bird Day was established by Bird activists. The holiday calls upon people to recognize the plight of captive Birds. It also draws attention to exploitation of Birds in the U.S. pet industry. On this Holiday, organizers suggest we reflect upon the conditions of Birds held in captivity.
Note: Our research did not find any documentation that this is a “National” Holiday, which requires an act of congress.
International Migratory Bird Day celebrates the incredible journey that Migratory Birds take each year. The Migratory Birds travel thousands of miles between breeding grounds in North America, and their Winter homes in Central and South America. Organizers say this is a Holiday to support, and to increase awareness of conservation efforts in support of migratory birds. They suggest a field trip into the Woods to look for and enjoy migrating Birds.
On each of these Bird Days, we encourage you to take a few minutes to watch and observe birds, and to feed the Birds.
Hummingbirds are the smallest Migratory birds.

Renewal Day is a spectacular day of new, and old, beginnings.
Things get old and out of sorts. We lose touch with friends, loved ones, and relationships. For whatever reason, we “let “things” go. Well, whatever “it” is, today is the day to renew it, rejuvenate it, and bring the spark back into it.
When we think of “renewal”, we often think of relationships. We vow our marriage will never get old, but we all know marriages do. We swear we will remain close to our parents and siblings. although over the years, we don’t. With a hug and a tear, we tell our college roommate we will call and write then all too quickly, the demands of everyday life keep us from calling or writing.
Renewal Day is not limited to renewing relationships and Social Issues. You can also renew:
- Your nails
- Your hair color and/or style.
- Your driver’s license
- A favorite magazine subscription
Gert the picture? Good. Get into Renewal Day!
This Holidays takes place all because of a play on words!
Star Wars Day is May the Fourth, because of a famous quote from the hugely popular Science Fiction series blockbuster is “May the Force (Fourth) be with you”
Great ways to Celebrate Star Wars Day:
- Watch any of the Star Wars movies
- Better still, have a Star Wars Marathon, and watch two or three (or 4) of the movies all at once
- Get out your laser sword and practice for the next invasion from the Evil Empire.
- Send a Star Wars Day Ecard
- Why not host a Star Wars costume party?
- Learn some Star Wars Trivia, there’s no shortage.
Some call this Day “Luke Skywalker Day”.
History and Origin of Star Wars Day:
While we are so glad that this Holiday exists, its creation was a fluke. In 2005, a German News TV Channel N24 interview mistakenly translated this famous Star Wars quote. In German, “May the force be with you”, was incorrectly interpreted as “We are with you on May 4th”. We do believe, that if this error had not occurred, someone, somewhere would have created this Holiday.
There are some references to this as “National” Star Wars Day, but we found no record of a presidential or congressional proclamation.
Thank you,
