Hawaiian Lei Day– This holiday begins on the morning of May 1 and continues on into the next day.
Hawaiian Lei Day is the Hawaiian version of May Day a celebration of Hawaiian Culture and its people. It’s a fun Holiday and a two-day event, centered around the “Lei”. A Lei is a colorful flowery necklace. The “Lei” is an unspoken expression of “Aloha”. While this is a Hawaiian Holiday celebration, I’m sure you would like to get lei’d, too. There’s no reason you can’t participate in Hawaiian Lei Day, no matter where you are.
Visitors to Hawaii, by plane, boat or other means, receive a traditional Lei upon arrival. Did you know nowadays Leis are often made of plastic? On Hawaiian Lei Day, people give and receive Leis. Hawaiian Lei Day is a Holiday of festivities and parades, filled with Leis, flowers, parties, dancing and more. Did you know there is even Lei making contests? Hula Dancing, Luaus, and crowning of the Lei Day Queen.
Each Hawaiian Island has its own signature, Lei. The island of Kauai is known for a Lei created from Fruit. They use Purple Berries, with a sweet scent are strung onto the necklace.
If you are not in Hawaii, we hope you still participate in Hawaiian Lei Day. Just grab your Hula Skirt and make Leis. Then host a party and roast a Pig and don’t forget to serve Poi.
History and Origin of Save the Hawaiian Lei Day:
National Loyalty Day is an opportunity to express and reaffirm our loyalty to our Country. In celebrating this Holiday, President George W. Bush wrote: “We express allegiance to our Nation and its founding ideals. We resolve to ensure that the blessings of liberty endure and extend for generations to come.”
This Holiday did not start with George Bush’ proclamation. Loyalty Day dates back to the 1920’s.
On Loyalty Day, we reaffirm our allegiance to our Country and resolve to uphold the vision of our Forefathers. We should also take a moment to appreciate the members of our Armed Forces who are displaying the ultimate in loyalty and service to protect our freedoms, liberty, and way of life.
History and Origin of Loyalty Day:
Loyalty Day was first celebrated in the 1920’s when Communism was on the rise and feared in America. At the time, May Day (May 1st) was perceived by some as a Communist Holiday. In a sense, Loyalty Day was intended to counter this thought.
The U.S. Congress made Loyalty Day an official holiday on July 18th, 1958, with the signing of Public Law 85-529. Then President Dwight D. Eisenhower, proclaimed May 1, 1959, the first official observance of National Loyalty Day.
May Day, which is celebrated the first of May is celebrated around the World since ancient times. Spring festivals, parades and Maypoles are important traditions on May Day. May Day has a number of meanings. In many other Countries May Day is a celebration of Spring and the coming of Summer. May Day is celebrated with Spring flowers, many of them blooming right in our backyard. To Communist and Socialist Countries, May Day is a celebration for the workers.
In many Countries May Day is celebrated as part of a one-to-three-day holiday. Of particular note, May Day is not a National Holiday in the United States, except in Hawaii where May Day is known as “Hawaiian Lei Day“.
In about 140 Countries, May Day is also Labor Day, a worker’s holiday. In many of these Countries, the Labor Day Holiday is on May 1st unless it falls on a Saturday or Sunday, when May Day is held on the following Monday. Only three Countries, the United States, Canada and Bermuda observe Labor Day in September.
Mother Goose Day was created only recently, as a Holiday to appreciate nursery rhymes and stories which are a favorite of children and their parents.
The term “Mother Goose” dates back to the 1650’s reffering to stories like Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty. Mother Goose does not appear to represent a particular person, because many of the “Mother Goose” stories were written both before and after Mother Goose was first used. Not only that the stories were written by numerous authors.
Enjoy “Mother Goose Day” by reading Mother Goose stories and rhymes to your families.
Origin of Mother Goose Day:
According to the Mother Goose Society: “Mother Goose Day was founded in 1987 by Gloria T. Delamar in tandem with the publication of her book, Mother Goose; From Nursery to Literature.
Q: What animal has roamed the Earth for over a million years, and has been hunted to near extinction?
A: The Rhinoceros.
Save the Rhino Day encourages us to be aware of, and support efforts to save the Rhinoceros from extinction.
The Rhinoceros is a fascinating creature. Native to Africa, the Rhinoceros leftover from the age of Dinosaurs was hunted to near extinction. Hunters on Safaris killed Rhinos just for sport. Poachers hunted Rhinoceros for their horn. The horn has been used as medicine, and for making knife handles, carved statues, and other objects. Animal Rights Groups have helped to save the Rhino from extinction, and their numbers have rebounded somewhat.
The horn of the Rhinoceros is composed of the same material as your fingernail.
You can enjoy Save the Rhino Day in a variety of ways. Watch documentaries on the Rhinoceros. Visit Rhinos at a Zoo. Go on a safari to see a Rhino! You can also donate to groups working towards preserving Rhinoceros.
Did you know May is also Be Kind to Animals Week -First full week of month although if you ask Charlie and I we believe you should be kind to animals every single day of the animals’ lives. How about you. Do you agree with us or not?
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
