International Beaver Day

Today is International Beaver Day which is a day to learn about and show appreciation for Beavers.

In addition to being cute and loveable, Beavers play a very important role in the environmental eco-system. Beavers build Dams. As Beavers create a new Dam, they are helping to create or restore Natural Wetlands.

You can find Beavers in Ponds and small Streams in many parts of the United States. Beavers are also found in many other Countries in North and South America. It’s fascinating to watch Beavers at work. Beavers ceaselessly build Dams, dragging fallen branches and trunks of Trees from the shore to the Dam building site. They often cut down small Trees, using their sharp teeth to cut the Trees down. A Beaver’s work never ends. They are either busy adding wood to an existing Dam or building a new one.

The most enjoyable thing to do on International Beaver Day, is to hike to a Beaver Pond and watch them busy at work building a Dam. Look around and your will likely see the Wetlands that they create, filled with a wide variety of Vegetation, Birds and other Animals.

History and Origin of International Beaver Day

This Holiday was created in 2009 by Beavers: Wetlands & Wildlife (BWW).

The date was chosen because it is the birthday of Dorothy Richards who studied Beavers for over 50 years.

National Burrito Day – first Thursday of month

April National Burrito Day

It’s a Wrap!! Move over Tacos. Burritos are a very popular sandwich or wrap. If you are a fan of Mexican or Tex-Mex Cuisine, you certainly have had your share of Burritos. Today is your chance to enjoy even more Burritos, because it is National Burrito Day.

Burritos originated in Mexico, a Spanish speaking Country. In Spanish, Burro means “Donkey”, and Burrito means “little Donkey”. How did this delicious wrap earn the name “Burrito”? Thankfully, the ingredients of a Burrito have never included little Donkeys.

The Burrito name goes back to one of several Mexican stories about its creation. According to the most popular folk legend, Burritos were first made by Juan Mendez around 1910 during the Mexican Revolution. Mendez wrapped food in Flour Tortillas to keep it warm. Juan Mendez carried this food on his little Donkey. Juan Mendez customers referred to them as “Donkey food”. Hence, the food was named “Burritos. The problem with this theory, is the Burritos appeared in the “Dictionary of Mexicanisms” in 1895, 15 years before the Mexican Revolution. Whatever and however Burritos were first created, I’m sure you’ll agree with me that were all so thankful for their creation.

The first Burrito recipe was just Beans and Rice with a Sauce, wrapped in a Flour Tortilla. Over time, Burrito recipes called for Meats, Cheese, Tomatoes, Vegetables, Sauce and Spices. Burritos are a good example because you can’t keep a good thing under wraps. Burritos became popular all over Mexico and by the 1920s, Burritos were quickly becoming popular in the Southwestern U.S. and Texas. From there, the Burritos popularity spread across all of the U.S. and internationally, too.

No Housework Day

No Housework Day is our chance to do anything, except housework. Better still, have someone else do your chores for a day. Housework is a daily, endless repetitive groups of tasks. Housework often goes unrecognized and worst of all taken for granted. If the dishes aren’t done, or there’s no clean towels, somebody notices.

There’s two ways to celebrate this Holiday:

If you normally do the housework around the house, cease and desist for this day. Kick back and enjoy the Holiday. Relax and do anything, except housework.

If you are a spouse or significant other, do the housework for your mate which gives them a break from the housework. You just might get an appreciation of how much work it takes to keep up the house.

History and Origin of No Housework Day:

Our research did not uncover a particular person who started this Holiday, or when it was first celebrated.

We’re pretty sure it originated by someone who was a wee bit tired of doing the daily chores, and just needed a day off. Most likely, they threw up their hands and said something like “That’s it! I’m taking a day off from all of this work”.
