Good morning, welcome to our series sharing Food Holidays: February 17th, 2022. Today is National Almond Day which I have a lot of times as a snack. But today I think I will purchase an Almond Joy for David and Charlie so they can celebrate National Almond Day. Would you like an Almond Joy with them?

You can toss Almond in a Salad, ground Almonds into Flou. Or use Almonds for a healthy alternative to Milk. Or munch on a few Almonds for an afternoon snack. Almonds are among the most versatile of Nuts. Filled with Vitamin E, Magnesium, and Fiber, Almonds are healthy and may even help fight heart disease. On February 16th, National Almond Day, let’s celebrate the Almond.

Five Facts about Almonds:

1. Did you know Almonds are mentioned several times in the New and Old Testaments. Almonds are revered as symbols of divine approval.

2. Almonds are actually Fruits, related to Cherries and Plums.

3. Raw Almonds contain prussic acids, eating of more than a handful of Almonds can be lethal.

4. A key indicator of cyanide poisoning was the faint smell of roasted Almonds on the victim.

5.  Greek mythology tells of the beautiful princess Phyllis, who was left waiting at the altar on her wedding day by her intended, Demophon. Phyllis waited for years for him to return, but finally died of a broken heart. In sympathy, the Gods transformed Phyllis into an Almond Tree, which became a symbol of hope.

NATIONAL ALMOND DAY ACTIVITIES

  1. Almond Bark is a delicious incredibly easy-to-make treat. Pour melted Chocolate over Almonds and add any other ingredients that catch your fancy, including Dried Fruit.  When the Chocolate has hardened, break the Chocolate Bark into pieces and package to give as gifts.
  2. Almonds come in a variety of flavor options, including Smoked or even Sriracha, and different textures like chopped, or slivered. Sprouted Almonds have a distinctive crunch, while Jordan Almonds are known world-wide as a treat.  
  3. Marzipan is an Almond Paste mixed with Sugar and a few other ingredients to make a pliable dough. Marzipan can be colored and used to create sculptures in the same way you would use clay, but Marzipan is edible.

WHY PEOPLE LOVE NATIONAL ALMOND DAY

  1. There may be no such thing as a perfect food, but Almonds are pretty close. Almonds are packed with vitamins, minerals, and other important nutrients. They are a great source of plant protein and healthy fat.  Studies have shown that Almonds can help reduce belly fat and lower cholesterol.
  2. There’s almost no dish that wouldn’t benefit from Almonds. Ice Cream to Green Bean Casserole, Almonds add texture, taste, and variety to your menu.  Everything is just a little better if you add Almonds.
  3. Eating Almonds can keep your skin glowing. Almonds are a great source of vitamin E and other antioxidants that nourish the skin and reduce signs of aging.  Researchers have found that several of the compounds in Almonds can help fight skin cancer and damage by reversing the effects of a poor diet, pollution, and UV light exposure.
