Bring Your Manners to Work Day

People seem to be overly engrossed with their cell phones and their busy lives nowadays? We seem to have forgotten our manners. Social Behaviors, politeness and respect is lacking everywhere you look.

Simple things like saying please and thank you are being skipped. Having good manners and being polite, has taken a back seat at work, at home and on the Internet.

Yes sireee, Bring Your Manners to Work Day is today and has come along at just the right time. This Holiday is celebrated across all industries and professions, and applies to everyone without exception.

Bring Your Manners to Work Day exists to remind us of how important good manners are at work. This applies to both employees and the “boss”. Here are examples: You want a day off and you say to your supervisor “I want to take Tuesday off.” You’ll get a much better reception if you say “May I please take Tuesday off?”

I have a question for you. How many times have you heard your boss say something like “Get me last week’s sales report.” You’ll likely do it quicker, and your moral will be better, if the boss says “Would you please get me last week’s sales report?”

Saying please and thank you is a basic example of good manners and should be used everywhere. Using good manners at work reaps significant results. Good manners helps to build good working relationships, improves moral, lowers employees turnover, and increases productivity.

When we think of good manners, were talking about practicing proper Social behaviors. Good manners includes being friendly, using proper etiquette, treating people with respect, being courteous, and treating people with dignity. Good manners is a building block to good relations. Just think about it, more people will like you and they will think better of you!

Let’s use today to start improving manners at work and as you practice good manners, do so with a smile. An honest smile is disarming and expresses genuine sincerity.

Then you can move on to improving manners at home, school and then the internet from there. And, we all know how badly we need good manners on Social Media platforms.

History and Origin of Bring Your Manners to Work Day:

Bring Your Manners to Work Day was created in 2013 founded by the “Protocol School of Washington”.

National Tailgating Day – first Saturday of September

Football is back. Woohoo or at least some people are happy for me I could care less about Football. How about you? The leaves on the Trees have begun to turn in splendid beauty.

Fall Weather has turned cool, crisp, and nothing short of luscious. Are you going to the big game? It’s time for a Tailgate Party. Grab your Football, pack up the grill and cooler, and let’s head to the game.

The very first football game was held on November 6, 1969. The term “Tailgate party” had not yet been coined. But, fans arrived early to savor the moment, and to enjoy food and beverage before the game between Rutgers University and Princeton University. Perhaps they tossed the Football around the parking lot, too.

Football fans, you know what to do to celebrate this day. Lets have a Tailgate Party. Load up the truck, SUV, or a car. Head out several hours early, to enjoy a meal, a few Beers perhaps, and lots of fun in the parking lot, before settling into your seats at the Stadium, to watch your favorite team.

What to Eat and Drink –  Many of us will opt for Traditional Hamburgers, Hot Dogs or Italian Sausage, with any number of side dishes. Did you know Chili is extremely popular, and is made hotter and hotter, as the Fall days cool down.

Do not feel limited in your Tailgate Party menu selection. Some people will set up a table and chairs, to enjoy a Steak or Ribs cooked right there in the parking lot. If local laws and Stadium rules allow, Alcohol may be consumed. Beer is by far the most popular choice.

 Happy National Tailgating Day!

History and Origin of National Tailgating Day:

National Tailgating Day evolved from College Football Games, which are traditionally held on Saturdays. We celebrate this day on an early September Saturday, when its perfect Football Weather.

This Holiday was created by Luke Lorick the President of the “Tailgating Challenge” in 2016.

We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” Holiday and we found no congressional records or Presidential Proclamation. Football is a truly American sport and is wildly popular, we sure hope our President or Congress formally declares this a National Holiday.

Newspaper Carrier Day is celebrated on September 4

International Newspaper Carrier Day is observed on October 10

Newspaper Carrier Day honors everyone who is now, or once was, a Newspaper Carrier. The list includes thousands, if not millions, of people. Years ago, this job was primarily populated by kids, from pre-teen through approximately sixteen. At that age, many, but not all, kids moved to restaurant, grocery store and retail type of jobs.

About Newspaper Carrier Day:

This Holiday commemorates the hiring of the very first Newspaper Carrier. Did you know Newspaper Carriers date back to the early 1800s. On September 10, 1833, 10 year old Barney Flaherty became the first Newspaper Carrier.

Benjamin Day, publisher of The New York Sun, hired Barney Flaherty to sell papers for his Penny Press. The only job requirement, was that he had to show that he could throw a newspaper into the bushes.

Now, few kids deliver papers anymore except in small towns. But, the “Carrier Day” tradition lives. This job is now largely held by adults, many of them delivering the paper from their cars.

About International Newspaper Carrier Day:

This Holiday recognizes the importance of Newspaper Carriers in getting the newspaper each day into the hands of millions of readers. This Holiday honors carriers all over the world, as they deliver the paper in all kinds of weather conditions.

Even President Ronald Reagan got in on the act when on October 6, 1982, he wrote a brief message supporting this day.

Have a very Happy Newspaper Carrier Day.

History and Origin of Newspaper Carrier Day:

We found lots of references and information on Newspaper Carrier Day.  However, we do not know who created the Holiday.

We do not know who established International Newspaper Carrier Day and The Newspaper Association of America appears to take some ownership of this Holiday, and publishes the dates for this event. They also sponsor an International Newspaper Carrier Week.

Also, President Ronald Reagan issued a Proclamation making October 26, 1982 Newspaper Carrier Appreciation Day.

World Beard Day – first Saturday of September

Did you know today is World Beard Day? A day of Celebration around the world. A Holiday to celebrate your Beard and to celebrate those whose face is covered with hair.

One of the goals of this International Say, is to promote and elevate the status of Beards throughout the world. If you have a Beard, there is to be no work for you today.

Simply relax, enjoy, and proudly show off your Beard. It is a day for those who wear Beards to be pampered by Beardless folk. On this day, those around you are supposed to wait on you hand and foot…. and Beard.

Back in the day, as in the day of the Caveman, all the guys wore Beards. Did you know there were no Shaving Kits or Shaving Cream. Back then, the modern Caveman always wore a full, and stylish Beard.

The idea of Shaving didn’t catch on until much, much later. By about 4,000 B.C., we know people began shaving their Beards. A rudimentary form of Shaving Cream was developed at the time by Sumerians in Mesopotamia. Nowadays, a significant and important minority of men wear Beards. The exception to this is the Arab world, where Beards are customary.

Sporting a Beard is a way to express yourself and your individuality. There’s a huge variety of Beard styles. The full Beard comes to mind first. But, let’s not forget stylish Goatees or the Fu Manchu beard. One of the most popular styles today, is a short Beard of just 2-3 days growth, or a week at most.

How to Celebrate World Beard Day:

  • Organize, and/or participate in a World Beard Day event
  • Show off your Beard
  • Take the day off of work
  • Let others pamper you.
  • Read a book , or watch a movie featuring Bearded people.
  • If you do not have a Beard and your a man, stop shaving today, and start growing a Beard.

If you have a beard, it is taboo to shave the Beard today. Doing so, is considered disrespectful. On the other hand, if you currently do not have a Beard, why not begin growing a Beard today!? Rip Van Winkle would be so pleased.

Famous People with Beards:

The list of famous people who wore beards is endless but I thought I would share a few:

  • Jesus Christ
  • Abraham Lincoln
  • Santa Claus
  • Rip Van Winkle
  • Blackbeard
  • King Henry VIII
  • Plato

An interesting Historical Fact: There were only five U.S. presidents who wore Beards. The last president to have a beard was the 23rd president, Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893). The other four Presidents are: Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, and James Garfield. The last Presidential Candidate to sport a Beard, was Republican Charles Evans Hughes in 1916. He lost. My times have changed.

Have a Happy World Beard Day!

History and Origin of World Beard Day:

It is speculated that the roots of World Beard Day dates back to around 800 A.D. when Danish Vikings had a special day to glorify Beards and those who wore them, which was most men at that time.

Now we do not know who created and promoted the modern  World Beard Day. Do you?

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
