The Mommies Reviews

I would like to introduce you to Ally Bush the Marketing & Communications Coordinator for Reading Partners, a nonprofit dedicated to ending the illiteracy problem in the country.

Reading Partners

We’ve recently been focused on amplifying black voices through literacy. Because students have higher levels of comprehension and interests in books that feature characters that look like them, it’s essential that black students read books by black authors.

Further, when children of different races see black characters in literature, they learn about the importance of diversity and seeing beyond stereotypes.

Here are a few books that Reading Partners would recommend.

Only 22% of Children's Book Characters Were POC in 2016 | The Mary Sue

Grace for President

This book features a young black girl as the main character. It shows young readers that they can do anything they set their minds to– even becoming president.

Grace for President also teaches readers about the American electoral system, proving that anyone can change the world.

I am Enough

This award-winning book teaches young readers a simple message: that they are enough. Empowering and uplifting, this book perfectly reflects the mission of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Hair Love

A love story between a black girl and her hair, this book champions natural hair in a way that society sometimes doesn’t. A message like this would teach self-love and self-acceptance, two important traits for young black readers to have.
