There are many traditions in different countries for birthdays that you have no idea exist.  Around the world, there are some weird and beautiful traditions that you can borrow for your next birthday.

Birthday traditions from around the world

  1. Norway – Norwegians have a particular song for the birthday girl or boy.  Their best tradition is eating chocolate cake on the big day; such a delicious tradition.  To top it all off, they pick up someone to do a little dance for them. What more could someone ask?
  2. Germany – Kids here get candles, a cake and birthday gift basket loaded with all their favorite goodies. They also do no homework or chores; how refreshing!  Adults are entirely different because if you are a single man over 30, you get to sweep the city hall stairs while your friends throw garbage at you which is to embarrass you for not having a girlfriend and you have to buy them drinks after that. Wow!
  3. Russia – The best tradition here is the clothesline birthday.  Adults hang up clothesline packed with small gifts that kids love to pull down and enjoy during the party and is pretty cool to do for your children.
  4. Vietnam – The Vietnamese have a tradition for both children and adults.  They have one birthday all of them regardless of the actual day you were born.  They have one day of the year called Tet, and it’s the New Year for everyone to enjoy.
  5. India – In India, children get to wear new clothes on their birthdays. They also get a special meal and in return show respect to their parents by touching their feet.  How cute for kids to appreciate their parents!
  6. Australia – People her enjoy a fairy bread on their birthdays. Fairy bread is bread buttered with sprinkles all over it.  Break the monotony of cake with this tradition!
  7. Jamaica – Jamaican people, have a tradition of throwing flour on the birthday girl or boy and this is a great one to steal for birthdays of all those around you; throw flour on them, especially on their hair, and then run for your life!
  8. China – This land of noodles ensures that on your birthday, you eat a plate of long noodles, slurping them in as far as possible before biting which symbolizes longevity to the birthday boy or girl.
  9. Poland – The Poles have a tradition that includes thwacking!  Seriously?  In Poland turning 18 is a huge accomplishment and to welcome you to adulthood, one will slap you across your behind 18 times with a belt in front of your guests right in the middle of your birthday party.

Mexico – Mexicans have the best tradition so far.  They have a birthday piñata filled with candy.  Who wouldn’t abandon their cake for piñata?
